How the NSW Aircon Rebate Works

What's commonly called the "NSW air conditioning rebate" runs through the Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) — the same framework behind commercial lighting upgrades across the state. When an accredited provider installs an approved high-efficiency reverse cycle air conditioner, the energy savings generate certificates, and the certificate value is passed to you as an upfront discount on your invoice. The scheme rules were updated in September 2025, so quotes from before then may no longer reflect current discount levels.

  • Available for both new installations and replacements — you don't need an existing unit
  • Split systems and ducted reverse cycle systems both qualify if the model meets efficiency benchmarks
  • Higher-efficiency models (think 5–7 star) unlock substantially bigger discounts
  • Homes and small businesses are both eligible

NSW Fixed Installed Pricing — After Rebate

No mystery quotes. These are fixed, fully installed prices for high-efficiency reverse cycle split systems in NSW — supply, standard back-to-back installation and the ESS discount already applied.

Standard back-to-back installation (indoor and outdoor units on opposite sides of the same wall, single storey). Long pipe runs, double-storey installs, electrical upgrades or difficult access quoted on inspection. Who's Eligible in NSW

Most NSW households qualify. The key requirements: the property is in NSW, the new system is an approved high-efficiency model, and the installation is performed through a scheme-accredited pathway — a regular sparkie or aircon installer without accreditation can't generate the certificates, which means no discount.

  • Owner-occupiers, landlords and small businesses can all participate
  • Replacing old ducted gas heating or inefficient window units attracts strong incentives
  • Your climate zone affects the calculation — the same unit earns different amounts in Sydney vs the Riverina

NSW Rebate FAQs

How much is the air conditioning rebate in NSW?
Typical upfront discounts range from $200 to over $2,600 depending on the system type, its efficiency rating, the size of the unit and your climate zone. Larger ducted systems and high-star-rated models attract the biggest discounts. You'll get an exact figure with your quote before committing to anything.
Do I need to replace an old unit to qualify?
No. The NSW pathway covers both replacements and brand-new installations in homes without existing air conditioning, which makes it broader than some other states' schemes.
Is this a government cheque I claim afterwards?
No — and that's the good part. The discount is applied directly to your installation invoice by the accredited provider. There are no claim forms and no waiting.
Can renters or landlords access the NSW rebate?
Yes, rental properties can be upgraded under the scheme — typically with the landlord's involvement since it's a fixed installation. Small businesses are also eligible.
